Heart of the Community Service Project: OPERATION BOOTSTRAP
Operation Bootstrap, established in 1969, is an all volunteer social service agency unique to Portage County. The organization helps families with basic needs in crisis situations and offers assistance that is not available elsewhere in the community. No money is spent on administration.
The group is able to provide groceries to more than 100 people a day. Since the virus thing came up the community foundation and the United Way stepped up to help. The group provides individuals with transportation services, rent assistance, clothing, medical assistance, utilities assistance and operates a food pantry. Last June 2020 tax period they had an income and revenue of $1,240,289.00 to assist the community.
HERE IS A LIST OF ITEMS FOR OPERATION BOOTSTRAP:
UNDERWEAR & SOCKS (NEW ONLY) basic kind nothing fancy, children’s-any size…women’s-small up to
INFANT CLOTHING – Newborn to 12 months, in new or used condition…they put together “boxes” for brand new mothers so anything needed for a brand new baby would be appreciated.
JACKETS – children’s – adults 3X (men’s and women’s) NEW OR LIGHTLY USED
WINTER BOOTS, all sizes (NEW OR LIGHTLY USED)
PERSONAL ITEMS: deodorant, tooth brushes & tooth paste, soaps (bars & shower soap), tampons &
sanitary napkins, hair brushes, combs and mirrors.
STAPLE FOOD ITEMS: Canned meats, canned fruits (own sugar or lite sugar), Soups of all kinds.
Since a lot of the people they help will be in motels & not apartments at the beginning the canned goods should probably be the kind you don’t need a can opener to open if possible.
MONETARY DONATIONS – If you wish to make a monetary donation please make your check out to:
“W.M.A.” and in the memo on your check put “Operation Bootstrap”. You can give the checks to me and our Treasurer will then make one check out to Operation Bootstrap so that the W.M.A. will get credit for the donations. Any questions, feel free to contact myself or Judy Laabs (Stevens Point).
